Link to Primary National Curriculum PE
Our high quality PE curriculum which we deliver offers a wide variety of activities both in and out of curriculum time. Children learn that being active is fun and an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. At the beginning of their school life children learn and explore basic movement skills, they develop these skills throughout their time at The Ellis and leave as confident movers able to play a wide range of sports. Over the past few years we have achieved many awards in sport and have maintained the School Games Gold Award for 3 years running.
At Foundation Stage and Key Stage One children experience dance, games, athletics, gymnastics and lessons in fundamental movement and multi-skills. At Key Stage Two, in addition to those taught earlier, pupils also have lessons in swimming and outdoor and adventurous activities.
In gymnastics children use the large apparatus which enables them to develop their gross motor skills (climbing, jumping, balance etc.) We play a wide variety of team games and take advantage of our playing field for many kinds of outdoor activities. During the summer all children have athletics lessons and learn the fundamentals of running, jumping and throwing. All children in KS1 have an opportunity to attend Dorothy Hyman at the end of the year and all children will have had the opportunity across Key Stage Two.
All children are encouraged to be active in addition to PE time. Children who attend breakfast club partake in games before school. Lunchtime supervisors have been trained as adult playground leaders and provide opportunities for additional physical activity at lunch as well as dance through music at lunch time. Also children from Years 4, 5 and 6 are trained as Playground Leaders providing different physical activities and games every day.
All children from Year 1 upwards complete the Golden Mile at least once per week.
